Montréal, June 26, 2024 – On Tuesday, the Kanawaki Golf Club hosted the second edition of the Indigenous Championship presented in collaboration with belairdirect, where a total of nine athletes were crowned after a hard-fought round. Trophies were awarded in the gross category, based on the actual number of strokes recorded on the scorecards, as well as in the net division, where competitors' scores depended on the number of strokes played minus their respective handicap indexes.
Ladies’ Competition
A breast cancer survivor, Traci Martin (Caughnawaga) now intends to enjoy life to its fullest. Just a few weeks after a double mastectomy, she was the star of the day, winning the amateur competition with a round of 83 (+9). As she couldn't be crowned in both divisions despite her net cumulative score of 69, it was Angie Marquis, also from Caughnawaga, who took the title with a net score of 79 (+4).
Among seniors, Nataly Kurtness (Saint-Prime sur le Lac) was crowned champion with a gross score of 86 (+12), while Dawn Goodleaf (Caughnawaga Golf Club) took the overall net trophy with a score of 69 (-5).
Men’s Event
Josh Mayo (Public Golfer) dominated the men's amateur tournament, closing his round at -2 (70) to win overall. Toddy Phillips (Caughnawaga Golf Club), who shot an 83 (+13), took the overall gross honours in the senior category.
"The Indigenous Championship is very important to us, because it shows that Golf Québec gives back to our community," explained Mr. Philipps.
In the net division, Carl Page (Mississippi) and Harry Rice (Public Golfer) shared the net amateur honours, tied at 67 (-3). Finally, it was Ricky Fontaine (Royal Québec) who clinched the senior net title with a par (70).
Golf Québec would like to thank the Kanawaki Golf Club for hosting the tournament, which was once again a resounding success. All eyes now turn to the Debbie Savoy Morel Cup, scheduled for two rounds starting Wednesday at the Ki-8-Eb Golf Club in Trois-Rivières.
