The golf industry Standing Committee is honoured
Who said golf was an individual sport? Certainly not the Pierre-Nadon Prize Committee, which honours the entire team of the golf industry Standing Committee for its collective involvement and also a very special achievement in 2020 in the midst of a pandemic.
The fact that golf was the first sport to be deconfined along with tennis on May 20, that not even a period or a comma was changed in the Protocol for the opening of Québec golf courses by Dr. Horacio Arruda, and that Ontario adopted the document are all explanations for this nomination.
We know the rest of the story. While it was far from certain that there would be a golf season with everything being stopped everywhere, golf nevertheless ended up reaching participation rates going back to its golden years.
"The more time went by last spring, the less certain we were of when golf would resume," recalls Dominic Racine, Executive Director of the PGA of Québec, who, as a sign of confidence, was named 2020 President of the Standing Committee by the other organizations.
Success was achieved through collective effort. Meetings or representations took place every day starting in March. The efforts were well rewarded.
"We got the go-ahead on May 13 to start again on the 20th. It was fast. I think the authorities noticed that we had done our homework well," he explains.
Very important because the pandemic continues while waiting for vaccines, what does the golf industry need to keep in mind when receiving the Pierre Nadon Prize?
"Very good question. One thing is certain, we proved that we can work very well together and share the same priority despite our different missions," says Dominic Racine.
