Québec, July 4, 2024 – Anthony Jomphe (Chicoutimi) was four shots behind the leader going into the second round of the 90th Duke of Kent presented in collaboration with belairdirect at Club de Golf Royal Québec.

The Saguenay native never gave up and carded a 67 (-5) in the final round to climb back up the leaderboard, but more importantly, to put on the winner's checkered jacket.

"Being behind the leaders, I knew it would take me a good day to hope to climb back up. I was aggressive and it paid off, I'm very happy with my victory", commented the champion.

This victory at the Duke of Kent enables Jomphe, who completed the tournament with a total of 137 (-7), to clinch the first leg the Triple Crown. Next up are the Alexander of Tunis and the Men's Provincial Amateur Championship. No golfer has managed to win all three stages in the same year since the Tunis was founded in 1950.

The André Gagné trophy, awarded to the best player from the Québec City region, was also at stake this week, as three golfers representing the local club were tied after the 36 holes in regulation.

In the end, it took two extra holes for Jonathan Vermette of Royal Québec to win, just ahead of William Forgues and Adam Girard Tremblay, also members of the Club de Golf Royal Québec.

"It went well overall, it was a good challenge in the given conditions and with what was at stake. I was happy to face William in this playoff, as he is my teammate on the Rouge et Or team at Université Laval. It added to the stakes, and we really felt like battling each other," concluded Vermette.

The Alexandre de Tunis, the next stage of the Triple Crown, will be held on July 8 and 9 at the Rivermead Golf Club in Gatineau, while the Men's Provincial Amateur Championship will follow from July 15 to 18, at the Milby Golf Club in Sherbrooke.

The three leaders on the Triple Crown Order of Merit will have the opportunity to take part in the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship, scheduled for August 13-17 at North Bay Golf & Country Club in North Bay, Ontario, as part of the inter-provincial team.

Jean-Philippe Parr (Ki-8-Eb) and Laurent Desmarchais (Vallée du Richelieu) will automatically make the provincial team, as they are both members of the national amateur squad. The remaining spots in the provincial quota will be awarded under the Triple Crown Order of Merit.

About the Duke of Kent

The Duke of Kent trophy was first introduced in an invitational tournament held on Saturday, June 22, 1935. This event was sanctioned by the Golf Association of the Province of Québec and won by Gordon B. Taylor of Kanawaki, a former Canadian amateur champion. Seven editions of the tournament were held at the Duke of Kent Golf Club before it definitely moved to the Club de golf Royal Québec. Since then, Graham Cooke has set a very high challenge by winning the precious Duke of Kent trophy five times. No one ever got close to this record except for André Gagné, a member of the host club, who captured the title three times (the latest being in 1979). In the new millennium, Lee Curry of Rideau View (2002, 2003), Mathieu Rivard of Royal Bromont (2008, 2009), Raoul Ménard of Pinegrove (2011, 2014) as well as his brother Émile also from Pinegrove (2016, 2018) wrote their names twice on the trophy.

The lowest score ever played in the Duke of Kent was the 134 strokes registered by Mathieu Perron of Club Laval-sur-le-Lac in 2013 after two rounds. In the 2000’s, Sonny Michaud is the last member of the Club de golf Royal Québec who won the Duke of Kent in 2012. Keven Fortin-Simard had successfully represented the club in 2007.

In honour of a member of the Royal Québec Golf Club who recorded his 50th consecutive participation in the tournament in 2012, the André Gagné Trophy is now awarded to the best player from the Québec City area. During his amateur career, Mr. Gagné participated in 55 consecutive editions of the tournament and saw his name engraved on the Duke of Kent trophy three times, in 1966, 1975 and 1979. He was inducted into the Québec Golf Hall of Fame in 2016.
