Gabriel Bernard Wins Amateur Title

Montréal, May 27, 2024 – Mother Nature stole the show at Monday's Spring Open at the Beaconsfield Golf Club. Professional Yohann Benson (Golf Le Mirage) still managed to shine, taking top honours, just as he did in 2019 when he first won the title.

Benson carded a 67 (-4), performing especially well on the back nine which he entered with three birdies. He was also able to finish the round strongly with another birdie on the 18th.

Windy conditions prevailed throughout the day, but the rain began to fall in the morning, and then picked up again in the late afternoon, slowing down the pace of many a golfer.

Yohann Benson was one of the lucky ones to complete the round in dry conditions, which certainly was an advantage for the eventual winner, but also for Gabriel Bernard (Les Cèdres) who was crowned in the amateur division with a 68 (-3).

Bernard was delighted with his performance under the circumstances, even though he says he didn't hate playing in the rain.

"It's kind of special to win a tournament like this. The conditions were peculiar, but I'm very happy with the way I played. We had our umbrellas at the start of the day, but we kept smiling. The sun came out around the 10th hole, and we finished on a high note," he said.

It was only the second tournament of the season for Gabriel Bernard, who had played in the Spring Open qualifier. He admitted that he couldn't wish for a better start to his season.

"I've worked hard over the winter and honestly, I was really hoping to win today (Monday). I think my preparation was excellent and that sets the tone for the rest of the season," continued Bernard.

Zaire Odile (Camelot) and William Duquette (Club Laval-sur-le-Lac) tied for third at -2 (69).

2023 champion Émile Lebrun (Club Laval-sur-le-Lac), Henry Dao (Vallée du Richelieu), Charles-Edmond Proulx (Vallée du Richelieu), and Oscar Ricketts (Beaconsfield) were the four members of the Québec team who competed in this year's Spring Open.

Golf Québec's next tournament takes place this weekend, June 1 and 2, at the Glendale Golf Club during the Assante Optimiste Classic.
