Cowansville, August 18, 2023 – Leader from start to finish at the 87th edition of the Men's Provincial Senior Championship presented in collaboration with belairdirect, Luc Guilbault (Drummondville) capped off a perfect week by successfully defending his title at the end of the third and final round of the event this Friday.

 

"It's the first time in my golfing career that I've managed to win such a prestigious tournament two years in a row. This is quite an honour, especially in such a high-calibre field!" exclaimed the veteran player just minutes after his triumph.

Tied for first place at -2 (70) at the end of Wednesday's first round, the Drummondville resident followed up 24 hours later with a 71 (-1) to claim sole possession of the provisional lead.

 

Only one shot ahead of Patrick Chagnon (Saint-Hyacinthe), his nearest challenger going into the final round, Guilbault was never troubled on Friday. His score of 73 (+1) brought his overall score to -2 (214), which ensured he went home with top honours for the second consecutive year at this tournament.

 

"Quite frankly, I didn't do anything outstanding this week. I just tried to apply a simple game plan, without taking too many risks. I stayed focused on the goal, and it paid off," said the man who won the first provincial title of his career in June 2022, at the Men's Match Play Championship.

 

"I wouldn't say that my game is like fine wine, but rather that I have more time to devote to golf," he continued with a laugh. “I've improved a lot on the greens and on my tee shots in the last few years, which makes me successful!"

 

Meanwhile, Patrick Chagnon experienced a more difficult day to close the event with a score of 80 (+8), dropping to third place at +6 (222). Benoit Robert, also a member of Club de golf Saint-Hyacinthe, took this opportunity to outperform his fellow club member and finish second at +5 (221).

 

Just behind the leading trio, Mario Sauvageau won the Super Senior division of the event, reserved for golfers aged 65 and over, with a total of 223 strokes (+7).

 

In doing so, the Club de Golf des Pins representative secured his place among the trio that will represent Golf Québec in the interprovincial team competition of the Canadian Senior Men's Championship to be held September 5-8 at the Big Sky Golf Club in Pemberton, British Columbia.

 

 

 

Luc Guilbault and Benoit Robert will be at his side for that tournament, where several other athletes from la Belle Province will be in action in the individual contest.

 

In the meantime, golfing activities continue throughout Québec, starting with the Victoriaville - Fenergic Canada Cup, which continues until Sunday at Club de golf Victoriaville. This will be followed on Monday by the Junior Match Play Championship, scheduled for three rounds at Knowlton.

 

 

In 2023, Golf Québec is proud to count on the collaboration of belairdirect for the presentation of the Men's and Women's Provincial Tours.
