Saint-Janvier-de-Joly, July 27, 2023 – James Newton was the only participant to play under par on four consecutive days when he won the 106th Men's Provincial Amateur Championship presented in collaboration with belairdirect, this Thursday, at Les Boisés de Joly.

The Royal Ottawa representative and a member of Team Canada carded rounds of 70 (-2), 71 (-1), and 70 (-2) before entering the final round of the tournament which is the third and final leg of the men's Triple Crown. Needless to say, that he had no intention of slowing down.

Newton experienced his best day on the greens at Saint-Janvier-de-Joly this Thursday. A score of 69 (-3) brought his cumulative score to 280 (-8) and earned him the Outremont Trophy, awarded to the provincial amateur champion.

"I'm feeling really good! I played well over the four days. I was a bit frustrated during the last few days of the competition because I was struggling to putt, but I was proud of the other aspects of my game," said James Newton, who made six birdies on Thursday.

"I like the way I played this week; it was a good tournament! You always feel stressed before the last round when you're in the lead, but I knew I was playing well so far, so I was confident."

The winner recorded a bogey on his third hole of the day, then a double bogey on the twelfth. Two sequences that he managed to push aside to keep focused, without being unsettled.

"After the double bogey, I just forgot about the hole and pretended I was starting the round again. I knew I could do it," he shared, happy with the outcome of the competition.

The best round of the Men's Provincial Amateur Championship went to Ellis Kinnaird on Thursday. He shot 65 (-7) to move up twelve spots and into second place at the same time. The Mississippi Golf Club player recorded a total of 283 (-5), one shot ahead of Henry Dao (Vallée du Richelieu, 284), who finished third in the final rankings.

Winner of the 2022 edition and of this year’s Alexander of Tunis, Olivier Ménard (Summerlea) tied for eighth place by playing par (288), as did Charly Pinel (Bellechasse), and Samuel Breton-Gagnon (Royal Québec). They are all members of the Québec team program.

Antoine Jasmin (Blainvillier/Québec team) and Félix Bouchard (Vallée du Richelieu/Team Canada) finished fifth (287, -1).

Bouchard will be representing Québec at the Canadian Amateur Championship along with Laurent Desmarchais (Vallée du Richelieu/Team Canada), and Jean-Philippe Parr (Ki-8-Eb/Team Canada), who did not take part in the event this week.

Also in the field, Justin Grimard (Blainvillier/Québec team) ranked 16th with a total of 291 (+3).

Next week, the Golf Québec crew will be at the Bantam, Pee-Wee, and Mosquito Championship to be held at Club de Golf Drummondville from July 31 to August 1.
