Justin Grimard Wins the Édouard Grondin Trophy
The Grondin Family Presented the Match Play Winners, Justin Grimard and Justine Emond, with their Trophies
Knowlton, August 17, 2022 – Justin Grimard (Le Blainvillier) was competing in one of his last junior events this week at the Junior Match Play Championship held at the Knowlton Golf Club. The player from Deux-Montagnes took this opportunity to win the first provincial tournament of his career, a feat of which he is very proud.
"It's my first victory of the season, and my very first at Golf Québec at the provincial level. It's quite exciting. I had chances to win before, it's my second to last tournament as a junior before making the jump to the amateur division, so it's a really good way to end this chapter of my career," said Grimard moments after his victory.
The winner defeated Thomas Grenier (Thetford) in the final by a score of 5-4. Consistency was the key to Grimard's success as he set the pace early in the final match.
"It went really well. I got a good lead early in the round and kept it up on the second 9. Perhaps I was hitting it a little bit worse, but the putts were still going in. I had a tough first round, but I made up for it in the second half of that round, everything went well after that."
Grimard also said he was honoured to receive the Édouard-Grondin trophy, presented in memory of the young Knowlton club member who passed away in a car accident five years ago. Édouard's mother and brother personally awarded the trophy to Justin Grimard.
"I want to thank the Knowlton Golf Club for hosting us this week. I also have a special thought for Édouard Grondin, I spoke with his mother during the week, she was very welcoming with us, and it's really an honour to win the trophy that bears his name," said Justin Grimard.
In the boys' consolation flight, Mathieu Chouinard (Royal Québec) won 3-2 over Matthew Dufour (Chicoutimi).
Justine Emond Records Spectacular Comeback
Justine Emond (Le Blainvillier) did not experience the start she was hoping for in the final round on Wednesday. However, she was able to come back from behind to win her first provincial title with a 1-up victory over Isabella Ferguson (Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club).
"I'm really happy! It started badly at the beginning of the day, I thought it was over, but I saw that I still had a lot of holes to recover. I continued to persevere and finally won. I really got my confidence back, I forgot about the previous holes and just concentrated on the next one, it was a strategy that paid off," said Emond.
The Saint-Jérôme golfer had a dream week in Knowlton, as she always had a good lead in her matches. She will remember this important victory for a long time.
"I often took the lead quite quickly in my matches and managed to win them in the right way. I had a tighter battle afterwards, but with my perseverance I managed to win. I am very satisfied with my week of competition.”
"This is my first win in a big tournament like this, I don't think I quite appreciate it yet!" she added, making sure to thank her grandparents who cheered her on throughout the competition.
Antonia Ho (Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club) won the consolation bracket with a 2-1 score over Mia Poirier (Le Blainvillier).
The Golf Québec team now turns its attention to the final round of the Men's Senior Provincial Championship presented in collaboration with belairdirect, which will take place this Thursday, August 18, at Club de golf Boucherville.
