Get the complete results – Junior Match Play Championship

Drummondville, August 18, 2021 – Both crowned junior champions earlier this summer, Anne-Léa Lavoie (Royal Québec) and Félix Bouchard (Vallée du Richelieu) claimed the titles of the 26th Junior Match Play Championship on Wednesday at Club de golf Hériot in Drummondville.

After claiming the Junior and Juvenile titles at the Provincial Women's and Junior Girls' Championship this past July, Anne-Léa Lavoie continued her winning streak and advanced to the final round with confidence.

"I played really well the day before and I felt that my game was ready," she confided.

She then faced Yasmine Qureshi of Club de golf Lorette in her final match. Lavoie came out victorious in this face-off with a score of 3 and 2.

Taking advantage of a bye in the first round of the event, the Royal Québec representative first defeated Morgan Best (Whitlock Golf & Country Club), then eliminated Alicia Henault (Drummondville) to move on to the final round.

"I made some great drives. I was getting reasonable distance and that really helped me get to the green with smaller wedges. My putting was good too. Overall, my game was pretty good," said Anne-Léa Lavoie.

She succeeds Emily Romancew of the Elm Ridge Golf Club, who is no longer playing at the junior level.

Bouchard wins again

On the boys' side, Félix Bouchard (Vallée du Richelieu) completed his final match with a 3 and 2 win over Mathieu Lafontaine (Summerlea) to raise the Édouard-Grondin trophy. The cup that is awarded to the match play winner is named in memory of the young Knowlton Golf Club member who passed away in a car accident in 2017.

Although he was nervous after losing the first two holes, Bouchard managed to recover afterwards and claim the title. A victory of which he is very proud.

"You always have some expectations in a tournament, and I wanted to win, but one of my main goals was exactly that: not to expect too much," said Bouchard.

It was his fifth win of the week after defeating Lucas Cardozo (Le Versant), Alec Geoffrion (Laval-sur-le-Lac), Thomas Lefebvre (Pinegrove), and Samuel Breton Gagnon (Royal Québec).

The defending champion of the Junior Match Play Championship in the boys' category, Jérémy Godin, also of the Club de golf Vallée du Richelieu, was stopped in the second round by Yaorui Xu (Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club).

Consolation flight

Golfers who lost their first match of the tournament on Monday were given the chance to play again in the consolation bracket of the competition. This format guarantees a minimum of two rounds for all participants.

Nicholas Girard (Vallée du Richelieu) seized this redemption opportunity by winning his next four matches. He finished the competition with a 1 up victory over Lucas Cardozo of Club de golf Le Versant.

In the girls' division, Frédéricke Desbiens (Royal Québec) won two straight matches. In her second match, she had the last word against Antonia Ho (Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club) in a sudden-death playoff on the 19th hole.

Overall, 48 golfers measured up to their peers on the course of Club de golf Hériot from Monday to Wednesday, 32 boys and 16 girls.

The next Golf Québec event will take place at Golf Château-Bromont, on August 21 and 22, during the Graham Cooke Junior Invitation.
