Montréal, July 19, 2024 – Élizabeth Labbé (Lévis), Marie-Pier Desroches (Montcalm) and Marie-Thérèse Torti (Vallée du Richelieu) were crowned champions in their respective categories at the end of the Provincial Amateur and Senior Women's Championship held this week in collaboration with belairdirect at Le Blainvillier golf club.
In the women's amateur qualifying division, our champion had her ups and downs before making a remarkable comeback. While in second place in the first round with a score of 70, just one shot behind Justine Emond (Blainvillier/Québec team), Élizabeth Labbé shot an 82 to slip into a tie for fourth place after two rounds. At that point, Justine Emond was still leading the field with a cumulative score of 145, while her teammate from the Québec team, Mackenzie Cloutier (Le Blainvilllier), began her ascent to take second place at 150.
In the final round of the event, the wind shifted in favour of the young university student, Cascade Collegiate Conference Golfer of the Year and member of the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds squad. With six birdies to compensate for two bogeys and a double, her 71 enabled Labbé to take the honours at +7 (223). Cloutier held on to second place at +10 and Emond finished third at +11.
Still in the qualifying category, but in the senior division, Marie-Thérèse Torti (Vallée du Richelieu/Québec Golf Hall of Fame) dominated the event over her three rounds with scores of 78-74-78-230 (+14). Her closest rivals, Hélène Chartrand (Summerlea) and Jocelyn Smith (Milby), battled it out for second and third place with scores of +21 and +23 respectively.
Finally, a participation division was also at stake in the amateur category. Marie-Pier Desroches led the field for three rounds. She had to face Carry Chen (Le Blainvillier) in a play-off to claim the title. They had both played +35 for the duration of the competition.
Québec Teams Are Known
Along with the Debbie Savoy Morel Cup played earlier in June, this championship forms the Jocelyne Bourassa Series, the order of merit of which is also used to identify Golf Québec's representatives in the inter-provincial competitions of the Canadian Women's Championships.
Mackenzie Cloutier, Naomi Yacyshen (Vallée du Richelieu), and Béatrice Grisé (Beloeil) will be wearing our colours at the Canadian Women's Amateur Championship, to be held at the Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia, from July 29 to August 2, 2024. A total of 11 amateur players from here will be taking part in the national individual competition.
In the senior category, Marie Thérèse Torti, Hélène Chartrand, and Suzanne Ricard (Royal Montreal) will make up the provincial team at the Canadian Senior Women's Championship, to be held at North Halton Golf Club in Georgetown, Ontario, from 26 to 29 August 2024. A group of seven women from Golf Québec's ranks will take part in the senior individual competition.
Nancy Walker Sportsmanship Award
Since 2004, the Nancy Walker Sportsmanship Award is presented within the Golf Québec Women's Tour to strive upon the importance of respecting fellow competitors, tournament referees, and the game of golf. The award was named for Nancy Walker, who had a tremendous impact on the Association in the many roles and functions she accomplished while at the CLGA – Québec Branch.
This year, the participants in the Jocelyne Bourassa Series honoured Naomi Yacyshen and Florence Hamelin (Du Moulin) in the amateur category and Jocelyn Smith in the senior division. In addition, a young competitor will receive the same recognition in the junior category between now and the end of the season.
Vidéotron Business Women’s Golf Week
During the Women's Provincial Amateur and Senior Championship, a big festival was held to celebrate Vidéotron Business Women's Golf Week, presented by adidas in collaboration with the PGA of Québec. Each day featured 100% women's activities, including a PGA of Québec women's pro-am, a golf clinic for junior girls, a long-drive exhibition featuring Québec professional Savannah Meyer-Clément, and a panel discussion powered by Hiatus golf on the future of women's golf.
Many Thanks to Our Partners
