Montréal, June 26, 2023 – Mia Poirier (Québec team/Victoriaville) and Hélène Chartrand (Summerlea) were the stars of the day at the Debbie Savoy Morel Cup presented in collaboration with belairdirect, held at the Mount Bruno Country Club in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville. This was the first stage of the Jocelyne Bourassa Series, which serves to identify the Québec amateur and senior women's teams.

It was no easy task for Mia Poirier in the amateur division. She had to battle hard in a sudden-death playoff against Julie Brossoit (Summerlea) and Léonie Tavares (Québec team/St-Raphaël) as they were all tied at 75 (+5).

Poirier, only 15, finally came through on the extra hole to win the Debbie Savoy Morel Cup. By capturing the title in her very first participation in this event, she also becomes the youngest amateur champion in the history of the tournament.

"It's a big surprise for me. I arrived here with very little to look forward to, but I'm so proud and happy to have won. I was consistent throughout the round, I stayed calm and that's what got me into a playoff," said Poirier after her victory.

"Playoffs can be a bit stressful, especially with two tough competitors like Léonie and Julie. I know that Léonie is a great player. I knew Julie a little less well, but she really impressed me.”

The Victoriaville golfer is also a member of Golf Québec's brand-new provincial squad. Poirier pointed out that being appointed to this team certainly had a positive effect on her victory today.

"We benefitted from very special coaching since the beginning of the season and even during the winter. I was able to improve several aspects of my game with the Québec team, and that certainly helped me win today (Monday)," she added.

In addition to Poirier and Tavares, MacKenzie Cloutier (Québec team/Le Blainvillier), Alicia Henault (Québec team/Drummondville), Morgan Best (Québec team/Whitlock Golf & Country Club), and Charlotte Boudreau (Québec team/Île de Montréal) all made it into the top 11 amateur golfers of the day.

A playoff was also necessary in the senior category when Hélène Chartrand and Marlène Desbiens (Murray Bay) were neck and neck, also at 75 (+5), after the 18 holes in regulation.

The competition was fierce in the play of that extra hole, with Chartrand, winner of the senior title in 2016 and amateur title in 2013, and Desbiens, named Senior Player of the Year in 2021.

In the end, Chartrand prevailed and claimed the third Debbie Savoy Morel Cup title of her career.

"The day went very well. I'm happy with my result. I was on the greens very quickly and that really helped me. It's my third win here, so it's a bit like the icing on the cake. I love the competition at the Debbie Savoy Morel Cup, it's quite enjoyable," said the winner.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Golf Québec will be at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club for the second round of the Alexander of Tunis, the first leg of the men's Triple Crown. On Monday, the first round was disrupted by Mother Nature when two groups were unable to tee off.

The Duke of Kent at the Royal Québec Golf Club from July 3 to 4 will be Golf Québec's following event.
