Sorel-Tracy, June 7, 2023 – The course advantage enabled Michel Daneau to be crowned provincial senior match play champion on Wednesday at the Club de golf Continental in Sorel-Tracy.

The host club's representative emerged victorious from this 40th edition of the Men's Provincial Championship, presented in collaboration with belairdirect, with a 1-up win over Michel Courchesne (Vallée du Richelieu).

It was a first competition in eight years for Michel Daneau, who had been away from the amateur tour for some time.

"It wasn't expected, but I'm very happy to win as soon as I get back," said the man who was only aiming for a place in the quarterfinals.

The two golfers were neck and neck in the final, but in the end, Daneau had the last word.

"Knowing the course very well, it worked in my favour! Especially on the greens, which have very subtle undulations," explained Daneau, who enjoyed a free pass as a member of the Continental.

A runner-up in 2020 and champion of this event last year, Luc Guilbault (Parcours du Cerf) was unable to defend his title this year. He lost in the quarterfinals to Sylvain Mercier (Le Versant, 1 up).

Guilbault was the only competitor to defeat Michel Daneau in the third round of the tournament. The future champion eliminated both André Frigon and Sylvain Mercier before reaching the final.

Michel Courchesne defeated Sylvain Harvey in the quarterfinals and Joel Fitleberg in the semifinals before taking on Daneau.

Lépine Grabs the Amateur Title

In the amateur division, Clément Lépine of Club Laval-sur-le-Lac, who started competing at the age of 18, beat Louis-Philip Coursol (Lachute) 2-1 to claim his first victory at a Golf Québec event.

"I feel great! It was a close match in which I took the lead around the 11th hole. My opponent came back, but I held on," declared Clément Lépine.

The two finalists met in the first round of the championship, with Coursol coming out on top 4-3. The desire for a rematch with his teammate from the Université de Montréal Carabins motivated Lépine on the eve of the final match.

"We know each other pretty well," he laughed.

"The events are so well organized, they're ideal opportunities to compete in Québec. I'm always happy to be able to play. It motivates me, it's a great experience, and it's likely to help me in the future.

Golf Québec's next event will be the First Nations’ Championship to be held on June 19 at the Kanawake Golf Club. This will be followed by the Debbie Savoy Morel Cup on June 26 at the Mount Bruno Country Club.
