Montréal, May 29, 2023 – The 95th edition of the Spring Open was filled with excitement on Monday at the Beaconsfield Golf Club. A sudden-death playoff was required to settle the tie between Émile Lebrun (Club Laval-sur-le-Lac), Justin Grimard (Le Blainvillier/Québec team), both in the amateur category, and Étienne Brault (Club Laval-sur-le-Lac) in the professional division. The three golfers were tied at -5 (66) after the 18-hole event.

At the completion of the play of an additional hole, Lebrun was crowned by making birdie following an excellent approach shot.

"I didn’t expect to win the overall competition because I'm only 16! I was hoping to win in the amateur category. I was a bit nervous as it was only my second time in a playoff. It's a great way to start the season," Lebrun enthused after his victory.

As a matter of fact, Lebrun's day hadn't started as he'd hoped. Everything changed for him on the eighth hole, where he picked up the pace to head for victory.

"It started really badly, I was +2 after seven holes, it was difficult. The rest of the day went much better, with seven birdies in the last 11 holes. I told myself not to give up and it worked," added the young amateur and overall champion.

"It just shows me that I'm capable of winning big tournaments and I'm going to aim even higher for the rest of the season!"

Étienne Brault was extremely impressed by the performance of the two players with whom he took part in the playoff. He had nothing but good things to say about the day's winner.

"I've played with Émile a few times this year and he's really fun to watch. I think he's the Bubba Watson of Québec! Émile and Justin are two very impressive youngsters who are certainly worth keeping an eye on,” he confided.

Brault also secured the title among professionals. He had already won the Spring Open among amateurs in 2019.

"It's going to be really special to see my name on the trophy with a (P) for professional next to it. I'm quite happy, it's been about a year and a half that I haven't been playing too well. I've been working hard with my coach over the winter, and I can see that all my efforts are starting to pay off," added Brault.

With a busy summer ahead, Brault was delighted to win Golf Québec's first tournament of the season. He believes he has taken his game up a notch, which will certainly be useful in future tournaments.

"I feel my game is really improving. I'm off next week for a PGA of Canada event and I think I'm going to get there with a lot of momentum thanks to this win. I can't wait to see what happens next," he concluded.

A member of the Québec team, Grimard, and Brault were still tied at the end of the playoff. Other players from the new provincial line-up who were in action at the Spring Open included Antoine Jasmin (Le Blainvillier/Québec team), Anthony Jomphe (Chicoutimi/Québec team), Samuel Breton-Gagnon (Royal Québec/Québec team), and Olivier Ménard (Summerlea/Team Canada/Québec team).

Maria Veronica Noriega (Beaconsfield) was also one of the headliners of the competition, the only woman to take part in the Open.
