Niagara, August 20, 2022 – Guillaume Paquette (Le Blainvillier) was very consistent over the weekend and entered Saturday's final round of the Canada Games on the Battlefield Course at Legends on the Niagara Golf Club in second place.
After a heated battle with British Columbia's Cooper Humphreys (Harvest), Paquette finally finished the competition in second place, taking home the silver medal with an overall score of -10 (278), just one stroke behind his opponent.
"I'm pretty happy with the way I played. I would have liked to take home the gold medal for sure, but I can't be disappointed with the result and my score. I struggled at the beginning of the day, but I had a great finish today," said Paquette.
Ontario's Peter Blazevic (Markland Wood) rounded out the men's podium with a score of -5 (283). Malik Dao (Summerlea), the other Quebecer competing in Ontario, finished tied for 18th.
On the girl's side, Anne-Léa Lavoie (Lorette) was the best representative from La Belle Province. Thanks to her excellent final round, the 16-year-old athlete managed to climb to fifth place at +8 (296), tied with Saskatchewan's Ella Kozak (Parkland).
"There were a lot of ups and downs this week. I had a good practice last night to get ready for the final round. The shots were flowing well today, and my putting was excellent, which is what allowed me to climb a bit in the individual standings. I knew it was the last round and I wanted to give it my all," admitted Lavoie.
At only 12 years old, Léonie Tavares (Glendale) did very well at the Canada Games finishing seventh at +11 (299). British Columbia's Tina Jiang (Quilchena) won the tournament with an impressive overall score of -14 (274).
In addition to his medal in the individual competition, Guillaume Paquette added another silver medal to his collection in the team competition with his teammates from Team Québec.
The team event was a mixed competition where the team score was based on the lowest score obtained by gender after each round.
Québec finished second with a total of 571 points, behind British Columbia (543). A very satisfying result for the medallists.
"We had a really good team and we had fun all week long. It ends the Canada Games on a great note. We had an incredible week here in Niagara," said Paquette.
"We don't often get the chance to compete as a team and it's really fun. It is motivating to know that we also play for the team and that we must support each other. I will keep good memories of the Canada Games", concluded Anne-Léa Lavoie.
The Golf Québec team will now turn its attention to the final round of the Graham Cooke Junior Invitational on Sunday, August 21, at the Château-Bromont Golf Club.
