Drummondville, August 2, 2022 – There were many smiles on Tuesday at the Club de Golf Drummondville where the traditional Bantam, Pee-Wee and Mosquito Championship concluded with the presentation of the second round of the tournament. Several athletes from the province took this opportunity to stand out and leave with one of the six titles at stake.

First, in the Bantam division, Charlotte Boudreau (Île de Montréal) and Charles-Edmond Proulx (Vallée du Richelieu) were crowned champions of the 2022 edition thanks to cumulative scores of +15 (159) and +4 (148) respectively.

The battle was tight until the very end of the girls' event and, despite some difficulties on the back nine, Boudreau was able to save the day on several occasions to defeat Sofia De Zordo (Balmoral) and Alexandra Botsis (Rosemère), tied for second at +19 (163).

"I started well today, but my second nine was really difficult. Fortunately, I was able to make a lot of big putts. I escaped many disasters during the tournament and my short game really helped me stay in the first place. I surprised myself with a lot of great approach shots," said the new champion, who has been waiting for this victory for a few years already.

"I had finished second in my last four appearances at this tournament and I'm very happy to finally win it," continued the 14-year-old with a smile from ear to ear. "I've made a lot of changes to my game since last season, and it's really helped me. It's about time I won it!"

Meanwhile, Charles-Edmond Proulx claimed the second provincial title of his young career after winning the Mosquito title at the same event in 2018. He capitalized on an exceptional first round to take his rhythm and finish ahead of Philip Bélanger (Cap-Rouge) and Charly Pinel (Royal Québec), second and third respectively at +7 (151) and +8 (152).

"I was at -2 (70) after Monday and that allowed me to attack the flags even more today. It really propelled me! My irons also helped me a lot and I was able to sink some big putts. It's a great win for me and I'm very happy with my performance," said the young man after the event.

Léonie Tavares Dominates

The athletes participating in the pee-wee category, reserved for 11–12-year-olds, also competed in a second and final round on Tuesday, and young Léonie Tavares (Glendale) did not miss the opportunity to demonstrate once again the extent of her talent.

The author of a -3 (69) round on Monday followed up with a +6 (75) to conclude the event. Her cumulative +3 (144), carded over the 4879-yard pee-wee distance, was the best of the 106 golfers in attendance, regardless of their category.

"This week I was going for slightly shorter yardages than usual, and my short game was very good. I was a little less precise in the second round, but I still managed to make good approaches and putts in important situations. That's what made the difference for me," analyzed the one who triumphed in the mosquito and pee-wee categories in 2020.

The 12-year-old athlete will now prepare for an entirely different challenge at the Canada Games, which begin on August 6 in Niagara, Ontario. “I still have a few days to make some adjustments and get ready for the tournament,” she said. “I'm really looking forward to representing Québec!”

Zixuan Tan (Public golfer) at +32 (176) and Kate Guo (Knowlton) at +37 (181) followed Tavares in the girls' pee-wee category.

On the boys' side, Noah Moreau (Lotbinière), with an overall score of +10 (154), walked away with the coveted trophy. He defeated Zack Bourgeois (Blainvillier), the 2021 Mosquito champion and two-time winner this season in the pee-wee category, as well as Karson Hurlbert (Camelot), who finished at +16 (160) and +17 (161) respectively.

"It was very enjoyable, and everything went really well for me. My tee shots were particularly good, and I made several putts of 20 feet and more, which helped me a lot," said Moreau. "I couldn't ask for anything better and I'm very happy to win my first provincial title!"

Zander Zhang and Florence Ho, Mosquito Champions

In addition to crowning the champions in the bantam and pee-wee divisions, the event allowed two young athletes in the mosquito category (10 years old and under as of August 1, 2022) to leave with a title at the end of the first round on Monday.

Florence Ho (Ottawa Hunt) won the girls' event with a +20 (92), while Zander Zhang (Rivermead) captured the victory for the boys with a +6 (78).

It was a second consecutive title at the event for Ho, who at just 10 years of age also won the 2022 Assante Optimiste Classic in the Mosquito division. She also went on to a second round in the pee-wee competition, where she placed fourth at +47 (191).

Zhang finished ahead of rivals William Landry (Les Saules) and Adam Lauzon (Vallée du Richelieu), who were tied for second at +11 (83), to win his first provincial tournament.

The Golf Québec team is now turning its attention to the presentation of the Québec Open, which is in full swing until Sunday at Club de golf Le Blainvillier. The official rounds of the tournament will begin on Thursday, with a cut to the top 60 scheduled for 24 hours later.
