Vaudreuil-Dorion, July 14, 2022 – In first place heading into the fourth round of the Men's Provincial Amateur Championship presented in collaboration with belairdirect, Olivier Ménard maintained his lead on Thursday with a round of -1 (71) to claim the Outremont trophy at his club, the Summerlea Golf and Country Club.

Ménard experienced a dream day on Wednesday with a round of 68 (-4) to take the overall lead in this 105th edition of the event. The 21-year-old golfer never looked back and put the finishing touches on an emotional week by wrapping up his tournament with a cumulative score of 284 (‑4).

"I'm really happy, it's something that I really wanted to do, especially as the competition was here, at home, at Summerlea. Yesterday the putts started falling. I hadn't made many long putts for birdies in the first two rounds. Everything was lining up yesterday, I was hitting on my lines, and it felt great overall," commented a smiling Ménard after his victory.

Home-course advantage certainly favoured the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield golfer this week. His round on Wednesday was the best of this year's Men's Provincial Amateur Championship. "I know the course very well because I play it every day," added the winner. "That was definitely a factor, I knew what to expect more than most players, and it helped me in my four rounds this week.”

Ménard's triumph is undoubtedly the most important of his career, as he had not enjoyed victory at a Golf Québec event since 2018, when he was 18 years old. Clearly, he was ready for the occasion and did not miss the opportunity to shine in front of family and friends gathered at the 18th to welcome him.

"The Provincial Championship was in Summerlea in 2021 as well and that was a tournament I was already targeting for this year. I wanted to have a lot of success here and I'm glad it happened this year," he concluded.

Also a member of the Summerlea Golf and Country Club, Malik Dao of Team Canada played par on Thursday to finish second in the Championship with a total of +2 (290), while Émile Lebrun (Île de Montréal) finished third in the overall ranking with a total of 291 (+3).

 

With this performance, Lebrun finished first on the 2022 Triple Crown Order of Merit. He also scored top-10 finishes at the Alexander of Tunis and Duke of Kent earlier this season.

As well, William Forgues (Royal Québec) will join the Team Canada members, Christopher Vandette (Kanawaki) and Laurent Desmarchais (Vallée du Richelieu) on the Québec team that will participate in the interprovincial competition for the Willingdon Cup at the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship, which will be held from August 1 to 4 at Point Grey Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, BC. Fifteen other golfers from the province have also obtained a pass to the event.

Golf Québec would like to congratulate the 153 golfers who participated in this year's Men's Provincial Amateur Championship. Our team is now turning its attention to the organization of the Provincial Junior Championship which will be held from July 19 to 22 at the Bic Golf Club.
