Val-d’Or, June 30, 2021 – The Club Sports Belvédère in Val-d'Or will host the prestigious Boys' Provincial Junior Championship from July 11 to 15. For this event, 156 young golfers, including four from the region, will compete on the course designed by internationally renowned architect Graham Cooke.
The Board of Directors of the Club Sports Belvédère has agreed with great interest to host the Boys' Provincial Junior Championship this July. This championship will welcome boys aged between 15 and 18 years old, coming from the eight regions covered by Golf Québec. It is interesting to remember that in 2004 and 2012, the Club Sports Belvédère hosted this competition and, based on these two previous events, the organizing committee will be able to rely on the same key elements to succeed in this year’s edition.
The co-chairmanship of the championship was entrusted to Ms. Johanne Fournier and Mr. Michel Leduc who gladly accepted to take up this great challenge by relying on the power of teamwork in a pleasant and cordial atmosphere.
"We are proud to host this major event for the third time. It brings together the best junior golfers of the province. It is a great tribute to the reputation of the Club Sports Belvédère and a token of appreciation for the course throughout the province," said Johanne Fournier, honorary co-chair of the Boys' Provincial Junior Championship.
Hosting a provincial level championship requires impeccable course conditions. For several weeks now, the Club's Superintendent, Mr. Jean-François Laprise, has been working hard with his entire team to ensure that the course meets the requirements of Golf Québec.
The 72-hole championship will take place over five days. It will begin with a practice round on Sunday afternoon, July 11. The competition will continue on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with the final round on Thursday, July 15, followed by the awards ceremony.
The participation of four young players from the region will be followed very closely. Cimon Paradis, (17 years old - Malartic) qualified junior #1 in the region, Ulysse Beaupré-Ayotte (18 years old - Amos), player #2, Olivier Charland (15 years old - Malartic), player #3 who started competing this year, as well as Malik Verreault (14 years old - Val-d'Or) who was invited by the Club (a privilege of the host club) will compete for the title on the Club's course. Cimon and Olivier are part of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue Golf-études program. Ulysse and Cimon have represented the region in various tournaments in the bantam, juvenile, and junior categories as well as at the 2019 Québec Games.
The player with the best score in each category (junior and juvenile) after 72 holes will be crowned as overall champion. He will represent Québec at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship which will be held from August 9 to 12 at the Club de golf de la Vallée du Richelieu in Sainte-Julie. The ten golfers with the best scores at the provincial event will also qualify for the Canadian Championship.
Players to keep an eye on at the Provincial Championship are all members of the Junior Team Canada Squad. Jean-Philippe Parr (16 years old - St-Célestin) won the Boys' Provincial Junior Championship in Bromont last year. He is now preparing to defend his title. Malik Dao (16 - Île Perreault) won the Men's Provincial Amateur Championship in 2020. He also finished 4th in last year's Boys' Junior Provincial Championship. Félix Bouchard (17 - Ottoburn Park) was invited to the Team Canada Junior Squad this past year. These three players are particularly prominent in the golf industry.
"This is a tournament that requires a lot of preparation for our club. The organizing committee is working very hard to ensure that the event runs smoothly. There will be close to 100 volunteers on site. The experience acquired during the organization of the 2004 and 2012 editions will certainly help to manage the logistics and coordination of the event in a timely manner," explains Mr. Michel Leduc, honorary co-chairman of the Provincial Championship.
The population is invited to participate, either as volunteers or as spectators. "They will undoubtedly be surprised with the quality of the game displayed by these young golfers," adds honorary co-chair Michel Leduc. To become a volunteer, please contact Nicole Ouellet at 819 856-9933.
Throughout the event, golf fans will be able to follow the highlights of the tournament on the Club Sports Belvédère Facebook page, as well as on the Golf Québec website and on its social media.
