FAQ

  • What is a differential?

The differential is calculated based on your two best designated rounds compared to the total course rating at the time of the tournament. Designated rounds include certain regional tournaments, provincial qualifiers, and certain provincial tournaments.
You can see the complete list of provincial designated rounds in our “Rankings” section.

  • Why should I have a differential?

The differential determines the ranking of Quebec male golfers on the provincial scale. This ranking allows us to select players who will participate in Golf Quebec's major tournaments. It is therefore essential to have a differential if you wish to play in provincial tournaments.

  • I am a new member of Golf Quebec. Where should I start to get my handicap?

Have you just joined a Golf Québec member club? Would you like to play in our competitions? Start by asking your club captain for more information. He or she will tell you which region you are in (the Golf Québec territory is divided into eight regions).

Your region organizes a number of tournaments each year that may be of interest to you. Some of these are identified as designated rounds. Your results in these specifically identified tournaments will be sent to the Golf Québec central office to establish your handicap on the provincial scale. To ensure your handicap is valid, always make sure you play a minimum of two (2) designated rounds.

For men, at the provincial level, you can participate in the Spring Open qualifying rounds. These rounds are played before June 1 each year and will allow you to establish a differential for the current year if you did not participate in last year's tournaments. You can also try your luck at qualifying for the Provincial Amateur Championship, which will count toward your differential for next year.

  • Is my differential low enough to be selected?

That's a very interesting question, but one for which there is no immediate answer!

We first need to compare the differential of all the players who have submitted their entries before we can identify the caliber of the championship. In some cases, we receive many entries from very high-caliber players, which lowers the cut-off and makes the championship more difficult for average players to enter. You should therefore contact us to find out the cut-off for each of the major tournaments.

  • Who are Golf Québec's members?

Golf Québec has three categories of members who receive different levels of services :
    • • Member facilities, are private, semi-private, and public golf clubs.
    • • Amateur golfers who are members in good standing of those courses are automatically our members.
    • • Public golfers can also become individual members by visiting the Join Now section.
