François Bissonnette victorious
Montréal, August 10, 2017 – The best senior golfers of Québec and Eastern Ontario were back to the Ki-8-Eb golf club from August 8 to 10, 2017, for the 81st edition of the Men’s Provincial Senior Championship. This high caliber senior event was presented for the second consecutive time on this prestigious course of the Trois-Rivières area.
François Bissonnette of Le Blainvillier captured the victory with a cumulative score of 74-75-69--218 (+2). The outcomes of the day were completely changed on the last hole of the final round. Danny Turbide was leading the field with an exceptional second round of 67 (-5). However, when he reached the 15th hole of the last round, he understood that he would need to fight for his place on the podium as François Bissonnette was experiencing a very good day. They remained neck and neck up to the very last hole where Bissonnette made the par while Turbide made a bogey. As a result, he ranked 2nd with a cumulative score of 219 (+3), only one stroke behind the winner. Peter Harrison of Ottawa Hunt finished third with 225 (+9).
With his victory in this major Québec senior event, François Bissonnette, a seasoned golfer who is well known both at the regional and provincial levels, also had the pride of seeing his name etched on the trophy next to other talented golfers.
Through the years, three golfers stood out of the crowd and saw their names etched numerous times on the trophy. Together, André Gagné of Royal Québec (2002, 2003, 2005, 2007) and Graham Cooke (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013) have surpassed all their co-competitors in the twenty-first century. However, the Royal Québec representative, Michel Giroux, still holds the record of this championship with six victories within the same decade (from 1993 to 1996, as well as in 1998 and 1999).
One last provincial team for the Canadian events
The top three competitors of the Provincial Championship, François Bissonnette of Le Blainvillier, André Turbide of Royal Québec, and Peter Harrison of the Ottawa Hunt, will represent Golf Québec in the inter-provincial competition of the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship to be held at the Kanawaki Golf Club from September 11 to 14, 2017.
