Valleyfield, August 23, 2022 – Léonie Tavares (Saint-Raphaël) and Loïc Simard (Vallée du Richelieu) rounded off a successful stay at the Valleyfield Golf Club by taking top honours at the 29th Junior Match Play Championship.
Facing Rose Morisset (Le Blainvillier) in the grand final of the girls' tournament on Thursday morning, Tavares shrugged off the inclement weather to put an exclamation mark on her week with a 5-4 victory. The 2023 Junior Golfer of the Year and member of the Québec team thus notched up her fourth victory of the competition to walk away with the coveted trophy.
In the boys' category, the title went to Loïc Simard, winner of all five of his matches played on the fairways of the Valleyfield Golf Club since Monday. He won 1-up against Hogan Blais (Camelot) to finish at the top of the boys' ranking.
The Québec Team member Mia Poirier, representing Club de golf Victoriaville, won the consolation final 4-3 against Carry Chen (Le Blainvillier). Zack Bourgeois (Le Blainvillier) achieved the same feat in the boys' consolation division, winning his last match by forfeit against Édouard Laflamme (Cap-Rouge).
No fewer than 48 athletes - 16 girls and 32 boys - took part in the event, which ran from Monday to Thursday. The final rounds were originally scheduled for Wednesday, but the vagaries of Mother Nature forced the organization to postpone them until Thursday morning.
The Golf Québec team would like to thank the Valleyfield Golf Club for hosting this championship.
Junior golfers now have a date with Golf Château-Bromont, where the Graham Cooke Junior Invitational will be played on Saturday and Sunday.
