Alexandre Mercier, New Amateur Champion!
Montréal, July 19, 2024 – From July 15 to 18, the 107th Men's Provincial Amateur Championship was presented in collaboration with belairdirect at the Milby Golf Club.
It was a hard-fought battle for Alexandre Mercier (Le Blainvillier), who was tied for third at -8 after two rounds of 71 and 67. He was only one shot behind Maxime Marengère (Rivermead) and three behind leader Émile Lebrun (Club Laval-sur-le-Lac/Québec team). He made a decisive comeback in the third round with a score of 69 to take the lead, a position he successfully defended with a final-round 69 that secured victory at -16.
Lebrun concluded the event just one shot behind our winner, at -15, and Anthony Jomphe (Chicoutimi) rounded off the championship's top-3 at -13.
Identification of the Québec Amateur Team
This event was the third and final stage of the men's Triple Crown, which includes the Alexander of Tunis and the Duke of Kent. Together, these competitions are used to accumulate points on the Triple Crown order of merit to determine the three players on the Québec amateur team for the inter-provincial competition.
Due to their status on Team Canada, Jean-Philippe Parr (Ki-8-Eb) and Laurent Desmarchais (Vallée du Richelieu) already secured their place on the provincial team. It is our new Provincial Amateur Champion, Alexandre Mercier, who will join them to represent Golf Québec at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship to be held from August 13 to 17 at the North Bay Golf & Country Club, in North Bay, Ontario.
The Triple Crown Order of Merit will be used to identify the 17 other golfers of our provincial quota that are eligible for the national individual competition.
About the Men’s Provincial Amateur Championship
Throughout the years, many golfers were honoured as they won the Men’s Provincial Amateur Championship; one of the most coveted title in Eastern Canada. Among them, legendary player Graham Cooke of Summerlea shares the record of four victories with Steve Davies of Royal Montreal and the very first winner of the event, G.A. Hutton of Beaconsfield. Champion of the centennial edition of the event, Christopher Vandette of Summerlea became the youngest winner in the Outremont Trophy's history at 15 years old.
