Laurier Perrault wins the Alexander of Tunis

The 75th edition of the Alexander of Tunis presented in collaboration with belairdirect was held on Monday and Tuesday at the Rivermead Golf Club in Gatineau. In a thrilling finish to the tournament, a representative of the host club finally prevailed! Laurier Perrault had the last word in a sudden-death playoff to be crowned champion.

Perrault carded rounds of 69 (-3) and 70 (-2) to finish with a cumulative 139 (-5), tied with Romi Dilawri. After playing two over par on the first day, the Royal Ottawa Golf Club representative delivered the best performance of the second round with seven birdies and a score of 65 (-7).

Having made five birdies earlier, Perrault was cruising to victory before committing a double bogey on the 18th hole. No less than six playoff holes were then needed to settle the tie and identify the winner. Laurier Perrault prevailed and lifted the famous trophy in the second leg of the men's Triple Crown.

Émile Lebrun, from Club Laval-sur-le-Lac, finished third with a total of 140 (-4).

A total of 138 players walked the greens at Rivermead Golf Club, for this event created in 1950. Winner of the Duke of Kent last week, Anthony Jomphe (Chicoutimi) finished 23rd this time, with a cumulative score of 146 (+2).

The Men's Provincial Amateur Championship, the third leg of the Men's Triple Crown, will be held from July 15 to 18 at the Milby Golf Club in Sherbrooke. The Triple Crown Order of Merit will confirm the inter-provincial team for the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship, scheduled for August 13-17 at North Bay Golf & Country Club, Ontario. Both members of the National Amateur Team, Jean-Philippe Parr (Ki-8-Eb) and Laurent Desmarchais (Vallée du Richelieu) will automatically be part of this team. One last place is at stake.

The remaining individual spots available in the Canadian event based on the provincial quota will also be awarded under the Triple Crown Order of Merit.

About the Alexander of Tunis

Created in 1950, the "TUNIS" is the most prestigious amateur tournament held in the Ottawa Valley area. Through its history, many names were written more than once on that coveted trophy. With four victories, Graham Cooke of Summerlea shares the event’s record with Robbie Jackson of Royal Montreal who stands out of the crowd with his 4 consecutive titles won from 1973 to 1976.

One of the three most important Québec Golf Federation tournaments, the Alexander of Tunis composes the Men’s Triple Crown with the Duke of Kent and Men’s Provincial Amateur Championship. It is held on rotation by five host clubs: the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, Royal Ottawa Golf Club, Rivermead Golf and Country Club, Rideau View Golf Club, and Camelot Golf and Country Club.

In 1950, the Governor General of Canada, Lord Alexander of Tunis, responded to a petition from Stuart Wotherspoon, President of the Royal Ottawa Golf Cub, and graciously agreed to become patron of this amateur tournament in order to promote the game of golf in Ottawa. In the intervening years, many prominent amateurs from the local area and throughout the province of Québec have participated in the event. Originally, the winner was assured a position on the Québec provincial four-man Willingdon Cup Team which competes against the other provinces at the national level during the Canadian Amateur. Since the early 2000s, this three-man team is now identified through the Men's Triple Crown Order of Merit.

The Tunis is managed on-site by the Ottawa Valley Golf Association (OVGA) which provides the Tournament Chairman and Chief Referee and establishes course length and pin placements for the two-day event. OVGA personnel also acts as rules officials, reception, starting and course marshals.
