Montréal, February 26, 2020 – The Québec Golf Federation took the opportunity of its Annual General Assembly, last Saturday, to honour Benoit Latreille and present him with the 2019 Volunteer of the Year award.

For the past twelve years, Golf Québec has been collaborating with the Club Optimiste Golf Junior Région St-Laurent in the organization of its Assante Optimist Classic in which Benoit Latreille acts as tournament president. This competition qualifies local youngsters for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship, an event held in Florida in which several renowned golfers such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and, more recently, Canada's Brooke Henderson participated.

Our Assante Optimist Classic is recognized as the largest Optimist qualifying round in Canada and the 3rd largest in the world. Far from limiting himself to the presentation of this provincial leg, Benoit Latreille also travels to Florida to personally welcome the Québec participants, ensure their well-being and encourage them throughout the competition.

Under the instigation of Benoit Latreille, the Club Optimiste Golf Junior Région St-Laurent has also become one of the main architects of the Montréal Regional Association's First Drive program and Regional Junior Tour (RJT) in 2018. To better promote junior golf, he also contributed to the implementation of a Junior Skills Challenge. Building on the Montréal success, he contributed to rolling out the initiative in the Québec City and Eastern Townships regions in 2019. Later on, at the Junior Skills Challenge National Event, Émile Journault of Cap-Rouge was able to qualify for the 2020 Masters Tournament Drive, Chip & Putt competition held in the United States.

In addition to his dedication to junior development, Benoit Latreille has also been of invaluable help in planning the Mackenzie Investments Open. It is thanks to him and his network of contacts that we were able to arrange with a local branch of the IGA grocery store to provide food and beverages to our players, volunteers and employees during this international professional competition. If he had not already been busy with his Optimist Club, he would have been one of our Open volunteers.

As a thank you for all the help he gives us without counting and because he shares his passion for golf with such generosity, Benoit Latreille is our Volunteer of the Year 2019.
