$95,000 to introduce children to golf

Montréal, October 11, 2018 – The 12th edition of the Golf Québec Fundraiser Tournament was held on October 2 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. Mr. Ted Fletcher, founder of the Mint Green Group and President of Cobra Puma Golf Canada, was Honorary President of the event. This traditional golf celebration was the pinnacle of the “From School to the Golf Club” fundraiser in which $95,000 was collected this year.

Golf Québec was honoured to team up with the Royal Montreal Golf Club and more specifically with Ted Fletcher, Honorary President of the event and member of the club, as well as with Robert Côté, Club Captain.

“Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Côté accepted the challenge raised by Golf Québec with great enthusiasm. Both of them share a passion for the game of golf. True to high standards in their professional lives, these inspiring gentlemen were committed to making a difference and facilitating the transition of children to our golf clubs. They truly were instrumental to the great success of this fundraiser,” confided Jean-Pierre Beaulieu, Executive Director of Golf Québec.

From School to the Golf Club

Following its tradition, Golf Québec is promoting junior golf development on the theme “From School to the Golf Club”. The main purpose of the Fundraiser Tournament is to raise the money required by Golf Québec to pursue golf development initiatives specifically designed for children and families.

The collected funds will be used to pursue the initiatives that facilitate the transition of children from their Golf in Schools introduction program to actually playing at the golf club. This can be done through golf professional visitations in teaching establishments and Future Links Field Trips to the club. Through twelve editions of this key fundraiser, over $800,000 was collected to promote the sport development of new young golfers. This year’s event was made possible with the contribution of major partners, including Cobra Puma Golf and Park Avenue Group.

Well-deserved honours

Golf Québec also took this opportunity to introduce the business and golf communities as well as its partners to the young Québec athletes who were crowned on the provincial, national, and international stages.

Three members of the national team were in attendance: 61st on the amateur world ranking, Joey Savoie of Pinegrove is a National Amateur Squad member, as well as Céleste Dao who is the Canadian Junior champion, Mexican Junior Champion and #1 junior girl in Canada and Christopher Vandette, the Junior and Juvenile Canadian Champion. Both of them are junior members at the Summerlea Golf and Country Club and played, in 2018, with the Golf Canada National Development Squad.

Other young rising stars participated in the event to support the Golf in School initiatives. They were: Laurent Desmarchais (Vallée du Richelieu), 4 times champion this summer - Emily Romancew (Elm Ridge), winner of the Québec Future Links Championship - Malik Dao (Summerlea), three-time gold medallist of the Québec Games - Logan Boucher (Summerlea), provincial juvenile champion.

In addition, Lisa Meldrum who is currently the teaching professional at the Royal Montreal Golf Club, addressed the everyone in attendance. She explained the commitment of the Royal Montreal Golf Club in junior development programs and how they contributed to her own development path towards becoming a golf professional. In her amateur years, she was crowned numerous times on the provincial and Canadian stages. She competed as a professional golfer on the LPGA tour in 2010 and 2011.

The Royal Montreal Golf Club

Royal Montreal is the oldest golf club in North America, having been founded in 1873. In that year, a small group of eight gentlemen sat in a dockside office and formed the Montreal Golf Club. Eleven years later, in 1884, permission was granted by Queen Victoria to use the “Royal” prefix. Royal Montreal was one of the five founding Clubs of the Royal Canadian Golf Association, better known as Golf Canada. Since then, the Club has played host to the Canadian Open in 1908, 1913, 1926, 1950, 1975, 1980, 1997, 2001 and 2014. In September 2007, Royal Montreal wrote another chapter in its history when it hosted The Presidents Cup; an event which enables the World’s best non-European players to compete in an international team match play competition against the Top 12 PGA TOUR players in the United States. The Royal Montreal Golf Club is proud of its history, traditions, facilities, and, of course, its members and staff. For more information, visit www.rmgc.org
